Fuerte has smooth, thin green skin that remains green when ripe (unlike Hass which turns dark). It has a more elongated pear shape, milder/cleaner nutty taste, and slightly lower oil content. The thin skin makes it easier to peel but more prone to handling damage. Fuerte is often preferred for salads and sandwiches as slices maintain shape better.

Kenyan Fuerte season runs February through September, with peak availability March-July. Fuerte season starts slightly earlier than Hass, making it useful for early-season supply. Combined sourcing of both varieties provides nearly continuous avocado supply from Kenya throughout most of the year.

Since Fuerte skin stays green when ripe, ripeness is determined by gentle pressure. Ripe fruit yields slightly to palm pressure without feeling mushy.
