Kenya is Africa's largest avocado exporter, with about 121,000 tonnes shipped in 2025, most of it Hass, according to the US Department of Agriculture. It is also the leading origin in the Gulf. Kenya supplied half of the avocado the UAE imported by weight in 2023, at an average declared value of 1.37 US dollars a kilo against 4.67 for Mexican fruit, according to World Bank WITS customs data.
We pack counts 12 to 24 in 4 kg cartons and counts 26 to 30 in 10 kg plastic crates. The count is the number of fruit in a 4 kg carton, so a lower count means larger fruit. Under the UNECE avocado standard, count 12 is fruit of 300 to 371 grams, count 18 is 203 to 243 grams and count 24 is 151 to 175 grams. Large fruit (counts 12 to 16) suits foodservice, and smaller fruit is the economical choice for processing.
Hass ships by sea from the day Kenya's regulator opens the season, usually in March (17 March in 2025, 2 April in 2026), until it closes it in late October or early November (25 October 2024, 20 October 2025). Shipments peak from April to August. From November to February sea shipment is closed. Tanzania is our emergency backup source, not a regular origin, so for those months we quote Hass from there only when supply allows.
Avocados arrive firm and unripe (shipped at 5-7°C). For ripening: transfer to 18-20°C for 5-7 days, or use ethylene ripening rooms (100ppm ethylene, 18-20°C, 85-95% RH) for faster 3-4 day ripening. Hass skin changes from green to purplish-black when ripe. Check firmness by gentle pressure. Once ripe, refrigerate at 4-6°C for up to 5 days.

Our Kenyan Hass avocados have an oil content of 18 to 20 percent. Oil content rises as the fruit matures, and export rules measure that maturity as dry matter: the UNECE avocado standard sets a minimum of 21 percent dry matter for Hass, and Kenya's export controls apply thresholds of 20 to 24 percent depending on the variety. We can provide third-party lab test certificates for oil content upon request.
