Frequently Asked Questions about Hass Avocado
Kenyan Hass avocados are grown in volcanic highland soils (1,500-2,100m altitude) that produce exceptionally high oil content (18-20%). Kenya's counter-seasonal production (March-September) fills the supply gap when South American exporters are off-season. Shorter transit to GCC (12-16 days via Mombasa) versus South America (28-35 days) means fresher fruit with longer shelf life at destination.
We export Kenyan Hass in count sizes per 4kg carton: 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32. Sizes 18-24 (167-250g per fruit) are most popular in GCC retail. Size 14-16 (large/premium) suits foodservice. Size 28-32 (smaller) are economical for food manufacturing. Fruit weight ranges from 200-300g, with consistent sizing within each carton.
Primary export season is March through September, with peak quality and volume in May-August. Limited quantities are available in February (early season) and October (late season) at premium pricing. For a year-round supply, we can supply from Tanzania
Avocados arrive firm and unripe (shipped at 5-7°C). For ripening: transfer to 18-20°C for 5-7 days, or use ethylene ripening rooms (100ppm ethylene, 18-20°C, 85-95% RH) for faster 3-4 day ripening. Hass skin changes from green to purplish-black when ripe. Check firmness by gentle pressure. Once ripe, refrigerate at 4-6°C for up to 5 days.
All our Kenyan Hass shipments include: KEPHIS (Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service) phytosanitary certificate, Certificate of Origin, and KenTrade export clearance. We ensure full compliance with EU import standards (which GCC regulators reference)
Our Kenyan Hass avocados consistently achieve 18-20% oil content, meeting and exceeding the minimum export standard of 12%. High oil content correlates with superior taste, creamy texture, and the rich nutty flavor that characterizes premium Hass. We can provide third-party lab test certificates for oil content upon request for quality-conscious buyers.
